Villa San Secondo d’Asti is within the Monferrato zone of Piemonte, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its landscapes and characteristic wine cellars.
The original village was founded in the 12th C., above the remains of a Roman settlement. It was protected by a gated wall, the arch of which still stands below our house.
“La Riva”, a panoramic Promenade, encircles the historic center, leading past our gate and up to an elegant 18thC. Baroque church.
Villa San Secondo rises about 300mt above sea level. It is surrounded by layers of soft hills, dozens of neighboring villages (some with ancient castles, towers and Romanic churches), lush fields of grain, pastures and hectares of vineyards.
The horizon is backed by imposing Alpine peaks.
Today, there are about 400 residents; many, descendents of the original medievel settlers.
The large main piazza with a busy Pro Loco civic hall for regular festivals, is a meeting place for all.
Piemontese dialect, rather than standard Italian, is the language used between our neighbors. But, attempts to speak Italian are greatly appreciated, and English, though practically unknown, will be met with broad smiles.
Within strolling distance of the house, there are: an excellant market/butcher shop, a friendly cafe, two B&Bs, a spa, a yoga retreat, town hall, post office, doctor’s office and four churches.
The ancient market town of Montechiaro, 2km away over a level road, provides most other services: restaurant, pizzeria, cafes, banks, pharmacy, dry cleaner, hairdresser, esthetician, supermarket.
Activities in the vicinity: Unlimited walking and hiking trails, biking (2 available to guests), public and private pools, golf courses, tennis (clay), skating rink (winter), horse riding, quad rental.
Concerts and art installations for all tastes, some in ancient venues, are popular. Festivals, fairs and food ‘sagre’ are held frequently.
Lessons in Italian, cooking classes, wine and cheese tastings can be arranged.
And, of course–personal explorations of our historic treasures, fine wines and famous foods.
One hour north to Alpine resorts, or south to the Ligurian coast.
Regular bus service links the village to the small city of Asti—12km away, where national north/south train service is available and there are two autostrada entrances.
Turin is a half hour trip; Genova and Milan are each about 90 minutes away.
